India keeps athletics gold streak alive but wins fewer titles at Asian Games

India won 24 athletics medals at the 2026 Asian Games, five fewer than in 2022, while its gold tally fell from six to one. The women’s 4x400m relay, anchored by Vithya Ramraj, secured the sole title and preserved India’s run of winning an athletics gold at every Games since 1998.
India’s athletics gold-winning streak at the Asian Games survived in Aichi-Nagoya, but the country’s medal profile changed sharply. The athletics contingent won 24 medals, compared with 29 in Hangzhou in 2022. Gold medals fell from six to one, while bronze medals increased from nine to 15.
The women’s 4x400m relay secured the only title, with Vithya Ramraj playing a central role. India added silver medals through Tajinderpal Singh Toor in shot put, Murali Sreeshankar in long jump, Sarvesh Kushare in high jump and Sawan Barwal in the marathon. Gulveer Singh won silver in the 10,000m and 1,500m and bronze in the 5,000m.
Several established athletes dropped from gold or silver to lower podium places. Toor won silver after taking gold in 2022, while Parul Chaudhary won two bronzes. Newer athletes also contributed, including Yashvir Singh, who won javelin silver in the absence of Neeraj Chopra.
Ramraj won three medals: relay gold, mixed relay silver and 400m hurdles bronze. She also set a national record of 54.75 seconds in the hurdles. The relay results suggested depth in team events despite weaker individual gold conversion.
