A press conference for the Chaos in the Ring Independence Day card descended into disorder in Lagos on Tuesday as Carter Efe and Speed Darlington traded threats before their October 1 bout. The confrontation took place at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Sheraton, Ikeja. A birthday cake presented to Efe was kicked to the ground by Speed Darlington during the exchange.
The event also featured a confrontation between actress Nkechi Blessing and Phyna. The disorder intensified when firecrackers set off by Efe’s entourage caused a brief fire, which organisers quickly extinguished. Efe questioned Speed Darlington’s decision to face him after losing to Portable in May.
Speed Darlington responded by warning Efe to protect the belt he had won in that fight, saying it belonged to him. Nkechi Blessing and Phyna also issued threats ahead of their bout. Event founder Ezekiel Adamu said the rivalry between the two women appeared to have become personal.
The card will be headlined by Godday Appah’s defence of his WBO African light-heavyweight continental title against Ghana’s Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah. The event is scheduled for broadcast on SuperSport and DAZN.
