Kebbi governor says state owes no salaries, pensions or gratuities
Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris says his administration has cleared salary, pension, gratuity and death-benefit obligations across the state, local governments and education authorities. Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has said the state does not owe teachers, civil servants or pensioners salary arrears, pensions or gratuities. Idris made the claim at the Nigeria Union of Teachers’ 59th National Conference in Enugu. He said payments for salaries, pensions, gratuities and death benefits were up to date across the state, local government and local government education authorities.
The governor said more than 5,000 professional workers, including teachers, medical personnel and lawyers, had been absorbed into the permanent civil service. He added that about 6,144 civil servants, including teachers and health workers, had been recruited. Idris said his administration had invested in education through the construction, renovation and furnishing of more than 2,000 schools.
He also said the service period for teachers had been increased from 35 to 40 years, while a similar change had been made for doctors. At the conference, NUT President Audu Amba criticised the proposed concession of King’s College, Lagos, to its old boys’ association. He called for the plan to be suspended, arguing that it threatened public education and teachers’ employment rights.
Amba also urged stronger education funding and implementation of approved welfare measures for teachers.
