Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to protect peace, unity and justice as the country approaches the 2027 electoral season. In an Independence Day message, he also called on leaders to show greater accountability and address social and economic difficulties through responsible governance.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said Nigeria’s 2027 general election will test the country’s democratic maturity, urging citizens to place peace, unity and justice ahead of political interests. Jonathan made the comments in an Independence Day message on Thursday, as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary of independence. He called on Nigerians to remain patriotic and committed to the country’s unity as preparations for the next electoral season gather momentum.

The former president said Nigeria had faced numerous challenges since independence but had continued to overcome them through the resilience of its people. He urged citizens to remain hopeful and work together towards a better future. Jonathan said the country possessed significant opportunities if its diversity and natural and human resources were harnessed for sustainable development.

He particularly appealed to young Nigerians to remain hopeful and courageous while working towards a country that could offer prosperity to future generations. He said achieving that future would require greater responsibility from leaders at every level. Jonathan called for personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability and respect for the rule of law as the country confronts its social and economic problems.

He also urged Nigerians to remain committed to national service and to help build a peaceful, secure and equitable nation. His message came as political attention begins to turn towards the 2027 election, which he described as a test of the country’s democratic development.
