Lagos boxing series reaches 150th championship in Yaba

The Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame marked the 150th staging of its divisional championship with a one-day tournament at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba. Former Minister of Finance Wale Edun, who founded the non-profit initiative in 2010, praised the young boxers for their commitment and performances. The event featured 10 men’s and women’s bouts, along with two exhibition fights involving secondary school students.
The monthly competition is organised with the Lagos State Boxing Association and rotates among the state’s five divisions: Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe. The latest edition drew boxers from 10 local councils and local council development areas. Edun said the divisional championships were helping to identify and develop amateur talent across Lagos.
He also highlighted their importance in selecting competitors for the Governor’s Belt contest. Champions from Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island and Epe are scheduled to meet on December 26 for the overall IBILE Champion title. The winner will receive the Governor’s Belt.
Ibrahim Akolade of Mainland was named the best boxer at the Lagos Central Division championship after defeating Isah Jimoh of Lagos West LCDA 4. His performance featured footwork, jabs and an uppercut described in the report as decisive. Akolade said the award reflected his hard work and would help his professional ambitions.
He said he hoped eventually to win a World Boxing Council title. LBHF director David Mohammed said the introduction of the IBILE Championships had increased competition and enthusiasm among the participants. He said the Governor’s Belt would provide a final test to determine Lagos’s overall amateur champion.
