Police chief pledges peaceful conduct for Nigeria’s 2027 elections

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force will work to ensure peaceful and orderly conduct of the 2027 general elections. Disu gave the assurance on Saturday in Lagos after receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from St Gregory’s College through its old boys’ association. He said the police had learnt from the recent Ekiti and Osun governorship elections and would build on what he described as the successes recorded.

The police chief said preparations and training were under way for officers who would participate in election duties. He pointed to the recent Osun poll, which he said passed without a recorded death despite expectations that it could become violent. Disu said senior officers and election personnel had been addressed at a conference and retreat.

He promised that the election would be conducted effectively, adding that the police had been instructed to uphold neutrality, preparedness, professionalism and accountability. The force has previously said officers deployed for elections would operate under the Constitution and Electoral Act. It also stated that personnel found undermining the credibility of elections would face disciplinary action.

A six-point security framework unveiled at the September 2026 senior officers’ conference in Owerri covers intelligence gathering, training, inter-agency coordination, communication and technology, community engagement and political neutrality. At the award ceremony, Disu said recognition from his former school was particularly significant and credited the institution with teaching respect, discipline, hard work and a commitment to continuous learning. The event also featured honours for Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso and other old boys, as well as the launch of funds intended to support the school’s infrastructure and long-term finances.
