Nasarawa opens Akwanga bypass to ease congestion and support growth

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has inaugurated a 5.2-kilometre bypass in Akwanga Local Government Area, saying the road will reduce congestion and accidents in the town while supporting economic activity along the route. Sule spoke on Saturday during the inauguration, held as part of activities marking the 30th anniversary of the state’s creation on October 1, 2026. He said the bypass would provide an alternative for vehicles travelling from Keffi or Gudi towards Jos rather than passing through the centre of Akwanga.

The governor said the route had reduced the journey by more than five kilometres for those travellers and would help extend the lifespan of roads within the town. He described the project as an economic corridor that could open new areas for development. Sule said the road had been built to the same standard as the federal highway to withstand heavy-duty traffic.

He also promised that solar street lights would be installed to improve motorists’ safety at night, while assuring residents that his administration would continue work on urban and rural roads across the state’s 13 local government areas. The Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Yakuba Kwanta, said the bypass would encourage new settlements and commercial activity along the corridor. The Chun Mada, Samson Gamu-Yare, said the project would ease the difficulties faced by motorists and residents and improve access to the area.

The governor also inaugurated one-kilometre roads in Akwanga, Nassarawa-Eggon and Wamba local government areas. The roads were constructed by the respective local government chairmen. The chairmen said they would pursue additional projects with direct benefits for residents at the grassroots.
