India’s Union Cabinet has approved a ₹25 increase in the minimum support price for wheat for the 2027-28 rabi marketing year. The government also raised support prices for barley, pulses and oilseeds, with the total payout to farmers estimated at ₹90,962 crore for 324 lakh tonnes.

India’s Union Cabinet has approved a ₹25 per quintal increase in the minimum support price for wheat for the 2027-28 rabi marketing year, raising the rate to ₹2,610. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision on Wednesday after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Wheat had been assigned an MSP of ₹2,585 per quintal for the 2026-27 marketing year.

Vaishnaw said wheat’s production cost was ₹1,264 per quintal and that the new support price was more than twice that amount. The Agriculture Ministry’s proposal covered wheat and five other rabi crops. Barley’s MSP was increased to ₹2,286 per quintal from ₹2,150.

The support price for gram rose by ₹83 to ₹5,958 per quintal, while masur increased by ₹390 to ₹7,390. Among oilseeds, the MSP for rapeseed and mustard seed rose by ₹413 to ₹6,613 per quintal. Safflower increased by ₹675 to ₹7,215 from ₹6,540 in the previous year.

The government estimates that payments to farmers will total ₹90,962 crore for 324 lakh tonnes during the 2027-28 marketing year. The rates were based on recommendations from the Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices. The Agriculture Ministry’s proposal considered production costs, El Niño concerns and global and domestic price trends, according to the source material.

The ministry has set a wheat production target of 121 million tonnes for the 2026-27 crop year, which runs from July to June. Wheat is India’s main rabi, or winter, crop. Sowing generally begins in October and harvesting starts in April.
